Philosophy for Lunch “Is It All Truly Relative?”
In Moral Dilemmas, Philippa Foot addresses various perplexities in moral philosophy. Of particular interest is her discussion of moral relativism. Presented as an inquiry into relativistic judgments in general, Foot starts by questioning whether aesthetic judgments, or “judgments of taste,” are relativistic. As a point of contrast, she transitions to morality in an attempt to determine “whether relativism is a correct theory of moral judgement.” After examining various theories forwarded both for and against moral relativism, Foot eventually alludes to what seems to be her own position on the issue, immediately followed with a critique of the seeming futility in attempting to resolve the dilemma. She concludes by stating that it seems “we are all at sea” when attempting to find an answer about moral relativism, and somewhat cryptically states that “the practical conclusion may be that we should not at the moment try to say whether moral relativism is true or false, but should start the work farther back.” We’ll look at Foot’s account of relativism, her own response to the dilemma, examine why she finds such a response futile, and ultimately, attempt to uncover what is meant by starting such work “farther back.”

No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin
$30 | 40 | 50 includes $5 per ticket handling fee
Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello pays musical tribute to her literary hero, author James Baldwin, with her latest show, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin. The New York Times said it is “an expansive, adventurous piece that turns Baldwin into an organizing principle but also features the thinking of Audre Lorde and calls-to arms from the poet Staceyann Chin that leave a third-degree burn… it’s some of the most hauntingly, melodically beautifully work she’s made —intelligent, sincere, funny, enraged, queer, sexy, intensely pleasing music.”
